Looking Back at Holy Smokes 2025: A Way Forward
On August 27, 2025, the Heart Ministry Center hosted an evening of community and celebration at the 20th annual Holy Smokes fundraiser. Gathered at the state-of-the-art Steelhouse venue, guests enjoyed soulful vibes of Omaha’s own Satchel Grande, who brought great energy to our night dedicated to providing A Way Forward.
Our heartfelt thanks go to our sponsors and all supporters who donated and attended Holy Smokes 2025. Your generosity fuels our programs and uplifts countless lives. We are especially grateful to presenting sponsors, Mary Jo and Mike Dahir, whose support reflects their spirit of generosity.
A highlight of the evening was presenting the inaugural Mark of Distinction Award, created by Jill and Mike Dahir, Jr., and Tiana and Joe Dahir, brothers of our former Heart Ministry Center CEO, Mark Dahir. This award recognizes a Fresh Start graduate who exemplifies our core values: compassion, community, accountability, and excellence.
Mark’s life was transformed by opportunity and mentorship, lessons he carried forward in his leadership and in founding the Fresh Start Job Training Program. The program equips individuals with skills, discipline, and confidence to build meaningful futures.
The recipient, Martin Gonzalez, exemplifies the impact of this legacy. His connection to Mark began when his mother introduced them years ago. Despite challenges, Martin stayed motivated throughout the Fresh Start program, driven by a deep desire to create a stronger relationship with his sons. Graduating in December 2018 as program graduate number 42, Martin has embraced and lived by these core values.
The program included inspiring remarks by Food Distribution Director Jimmy King, an energetic auction, and Raise The Paddle.
Holy Smokes 2025 was a celebration of hope. A way forward looks different for everyone. At Heart Ministry Center, a way forward can be a next meal, receiving needed medical care, or finding a program that offers a path to self-sufficiency.
We are deeply grateful to all who attended and supported Holy Smokes. Thank you for being the heart of Heart Ministry Center.
